Control Weeds Safely, with Little Effort!
Using corn to control weeds in your garden? Did I hear that right? Read on for a look at a novel, green, and very effective method for controlling weeds.
When you prepare your garden soil for flowers and vegetables, you are also preparing the perfect environment for weeds. What to do? A natural product made from corn can solve this problem in any garden by preventing weed seeds from growing in the first place.
Corn gluten, used as poultry and cattle feed, is a byproduct of milling corn. By accident, someone noticed that this gluten prevents the sprouting of weed seeds. As a bonus, corn gluten is a great source of nitrogen to feed your garden plants and is harmless to people, pets and birds! What more could we ask for?
How does this miracle work? The gluten prevents a tiny weed sprout from growing roots, but plants that already have roots are not affected. For this reason, apply corn gluten early in the season before weed seeds get established with roots bit after garden crops have put down roots. Repeated applications are necessary for good suppression rates, each application lasting a month or so.
Apply corn gluten by broadcasting on the growing bed, using about 20-40 # to 1000 sq. ft. Rake it lightly into soil and water it in to make it effective. Excessive rain after application will make it lose its effectiveness, so apply the corn gluten when no rain is expected for several days.
Because this natural product does no harm to mature plants, you can safely use it on flowers, vegetables, or potted plants. One caution, though, avoid using it where you plant shallow seeded crops, such as carrots or lettuce, as it inhibits root growth in close-to-the-surface plants.
By using corn gluten intelligently, you will spend much more time enjoying your garden, and much less time dealing with those pesky weeds.
